1) National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE): www.naecte.org

The reason I chose to look at this organization is because I am an Early Childhood Educator, and was drawn to their goals and purpose. They are a true community of practice, and you can learn a lot from becoming a member.

A job opportunity with NAECTE I would be interested in would be the Child Development Specialist in San Diego, CA. The child development specialist will provide high quality assessment and intervention activities for children ranging in ages 0-5. They will also work on an interdisciplinary care team to participate in developmental intervention services. To be considered for this position you must have; 1) B.S. in Child Development, Psychology, Education, or Speech and Language Pathology with additional coursework in Special Education or related field or equivalent degree from another country, 2) Minimum 1 year working with young children birth to 5 years, 3) Current CPR, and 4) Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.

2) Council for Exceptional Children (CEC): http://www.cec.sped.org/

The CEC is the leading voice for special and gifted education. They ensure that the needs of children and youth with exceptionalities are met in educational legislation, that professional standards for the field are established, and initiatives to improve special education practice are developed.

The reason I chose to look at this organization is because I have exceptional children in my classroom. It is important to me to keep up on special education issues, and to belong to an organization that gives a voice to these children, and helps educators, like myself, work with them.

A job opportunity with the CEC I would be interested in is the Assistant Professor of Education at Mayville State University. The position will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; academic advising; scheduling placements for clinical field experiences; supervision of tutorial experiences, internships and/or service learning; committee assignments; mentoring; and other divisional duties as needed. Qualifications for this position are; 1) Master’s degree in Special Education or Early Childhood/Elementary Education, 2) PreK-Adult teaching, training and supervision experience (e.g., field experiences; internships; student teaching), 3) Working knowledge of research-based instructional strategies, 4) Teaching experience face-to-face in a higher education setting, 5) Three years of successful Special Ed. teaching at Early Childhood/Elementary Ed. Level, and 6) Background/experience in applying instructional technology as a tool in education (e.g. Excel; Publisher; Presentation Graphics; Moodle; Live Text).

3) Zero to Three: http://www.zerotothree.org/

Zero to Three is a national, nonprofit organization that provides parents, professionals and policymakers with the knowledge and know-how to nurture early development. The mission of Zero to Three is to ensure that all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life.

The reason I chose to look at this organization is because I have gotten a lot of great information from them throughout my graduate degree program at Walden University. I agree with their position statements and mission, and believe that they are a great resource for educators and parents alike.

A job opportunity with Zero to Three I would be interested in is the Senior Program Associate for the Early Head Start National Resource Center (EHS NRC), in Washington DC. The Senior Program Associate position is responsible for supporting the EHS NRC efforts to effectively provide training and technical assistance (TA) to Early Head Start programs, federal staff and TA providers by assisting with the planning, development and implementation of designated meetings and conferences. Meetings to be supported include the annual Birth to Three Institute (BTT), the National Orientation Conferences, and various other local or national meetings where the EHS NRC may be training and/or exhibiting resources and materials. The Senior Program Associate also supports the EHS NRC’s efforts to disseminate products and materials by working closely with the Multimedia Specialist to ensure all materials are posted to the Office of Head Start’s website, the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC). This position reports directly to the Project Manager, Conferences and Meetings. Qualifications for this position are; Bachelor’s degree level of education (early childhood highly desirable, but not required); or 3 – 5 years equivalent experience.

  1. Dear Melanie
I like your choices of organizations that you have chosen as your interest of working with. There are so many organizations to chose from that it makes it difficult to narrow down to three. I for one would be happy to be a part of any one of them as long as it is working for the betterment of children and their families and along with others that have the same interest. Thanks for sharing your post, and I wish you the best of luck if you decide to seek employment with your organizations that you have chosen.

  2. Dear Melanie
I too like your choices of organizations. I am especially interested in the Council of Exceptional Children. I congratulate you on working with children who have special needs and their families. As the population of children with special needs continues to grow adults are finding themselves working with these children for the first time. I share that because my cousin's little boy is diagnosed with Emanuel Syndrome. There are 200 children with Emanuel Syndrome. The presence of an extra small chromosome made up of pieces of chromosomes 11 and 22. Our family and those around us are constantly learning with Sebastian who is 4 years old. He doesn't speak but his smile says it all. He can't walk but he gets from point A to point B faster than Speedy Gonzalez. I always tell myself and others "Don't think about what he can not do, focus on what he can contribute."
    Great Post.

  3. Thank you for sharing your resources! I have not come across the Council of Exceptional Children! I am working on inclusion for my capstone project and this would be a great resource for me to use. People often forget about the gifted children and how they also need to be included into the classroom. Being a professor would be a great opportunity! Teaching others how important these children really are. The NAECTE would also be a great organization to work with! I would love to be apart of an organization tat helps support myself and other teachers. When it comes to teaching it is important that we all support each other and rally together to be the voice for our children and it sounds that this organizations would be very helpful in supporting us. Thanks for your great resources!

  4. Hi Melanie,
All three positions would place you in a position to make a real difference in the lives of children and their families. It would be nice if everyone in the field of early education had a heart to see the lives of children and their families change for he better.
